Identity Theft Questions:
1. Define Identity Theft.
Identity theft is the stealing of another’s personal information to engage in criminal activities.
2. Give at least three examples of how identity theft can occur.
- Students may leave personal information lying around dorm rooms at college.
- Many young adults do not balance checkbooks, keep receipts or check bills before paying them.
- Some colleges put Social Security numbers on sensitive items, such as student ID cards, tests, attendance sheets and grade postings.
3. How can identity theft ruin financial resources?
Once the thief has some initial information, he or she can find additional information needed to steal money from you bank account, or use credit off of your credit cards.
4. How serious of an issue is it, are there any statistics on the crime rates?
- There are over 2000 victims per day that are estimated to lose between $20,000 and $30,000 per incident.
- In the next five years, it is estimated that one in four people will be a victim, or a relative of a victim of identity theft.
5. Is it easy to become a victim of identity theft, explain why or why not?
It depends on how knowledgeable you are with identity theft, and ways you know that people can do it to you.
6. What sort of problems will a victim have after an identity theft?
They could be faced with major debt, bad credit, an possibly jail time.
7. What type of information is usually taken in a theft?
- Current and previous addresses and phone numbers — Both can be used by an identity thief to pretend they are that person or to obtain more information about the victim.
- Current and previous employment information — Both can be used to jeopardize the victim’s identity.
- Financial account information — This includes checking and savings accounts, credit cards, debit cards, and financial planning information.
8. How is this information obtained?
This information can be obtained by either be brilliant computer hackers, or somebody who stole your wallet from you, or even someone who was watching you enter your bank pin.
9. What are some ways to prevent yourself from becoming a victim.
- Don’t carry more than one or two credit cards at a time.
- Limit the number of cards used, and cancel unused ones in writing.
- Never give account information over the phone.
- Don’t throw away things with personal information them, destroy them
10. Finally, what should you do if you have been victimized by identity theft?
Contact the police, and your credit card companies and have your assets frozen until the issue is resolved.
Plugin Questions-Oscar
